What is therapy?

Therapy, often referred to as counselling or psychotherapy, is a collaborative process between a therapist and an individual (or couple) aimed at exploring emotions, behaviours, and thoughts to facilitate positive change and personal growth.
At its core, therapy provides a safe and supportive environment where individuals and couples can openly discuss their concerns, struggles, and aspirations without fear of judgment.
One of the primary objectives of therapy is to help individuals develop effective coping strategies and tools to navigate life's challenges with resilience and confidence. By exploring patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving, individuals gain insight into the underlying factors contributing to their difficulties and learn healthier ways of coping and problem-solving.
Your first session:
what to expect
Introduction
We’ll start by talking about why you’ve decided to seek therapy, and what you’re hoping to gain from it
Dig a little deeper
We’ll then begin working on some of your issues, and determine if we are comfortable working together
Take it from there
If we’re both happy to continue, we can book further sessions to move forward with your therapy

Who am I?
I am an experienced counsellor and psychotherapist, based within the Bursledon/Hamble/Netley Abbey area of Southampton, providing a warm, caring and non-judgmental environment.
Ashley Malcolm
BACP Accredited Psychotherapist

My Experience
I’ve been in practice as a BACP Accredited Psychotherapist for almost 10 years, working with people of all genders, ages (14+), races, and sexualities. I am also a trained hypnotherapist.
I have worked within a domestic and sexual abuse service, a young persons’ service, and a couples counselling agency (including family pairs, for example father and son). I also spent some time as a lecturer in Person-Centred Counselling & Psychotherapy, and as a group facilitator in personal development. As well as my private practice I work as a counsellor for Victim Support.
My Approach
Grounded in Person-centred therapy, I have a humanistic belief that we all have the capacity and intent for growth and change.
I strive to help people free themselves from disabling assumptions and beliefs, so that they can live full lives. I achieve this by providing a safe environment conducive to honest self-exploration, so that you can explore your feelings and speak openly.
As we are all unique, I am flexible in my approach, adapting to the individual (or couple).

My practice is located at my home in Bursledon — approximately 1 mile from Junction 8, off the M27.
Our sessions will take place in a welcoming consulting room on the ground floor, separated from the rest of the house. There is plenty of parking on the driveway which is set back from the road.
Starting with weekly sessions is standard practice in therapy. This frequency allows enough time for you to process what you’ve discussed in sessions and implement changes, but it's also frequent enough to maintain momentum and progress.
Often at least six weeks is best, sometimes less and sometimes more, it all depends on what you want to work through. It may for example only be feasible to have fortnightly sessions, or go for a few weeks-months without it. These just depend on you!
I have a wealth of experience as a psychotherapist and counsellor, including working with trauma (particularly sexual abuse) anxiety, depression, bereavement, relationships, anger management, sexuality, family and work issues and more.
I have worked within a domestic and sexual abuse service, a young persons’ service and as a couples counselling agency (including family pairs, for example father and son). A lecturer in Person-Centred Counselling & Psychotherapy and a group facilitator in personal development.
Further training/experience includes hypnotherapy. As well as my private practice I work as a counsellor for Victim Support. I am also accredited by the BACP.
